Strategic - Technical - Practical

Wednesday 18th - Thursday 19th June 2008 Kempinski Hotel Bristol
Berlin, Germany

CONFERENCE RATIONALE

In 2007, IBC's Decommissioning & Waste Cooperation in Nuclear conference in Vilnius examined the ongoing challenges in the CEE decommissioning and waste scene. Practical experiences were shared and strategic discussions occurred between representatives from across the CEE nuclear community and beyond...

The vital and complex process of decommissioning and waste management has resulted in a great deal of experience globally, not least in the CEE region, where the need for implementation and completion of strategies has emphasised the importance of cooperation and the sharing of ideas. Regulatory and funding aspects are still areas where discussion is ongoing, and clearance continues to cause issue in cost and dose, for both workers and public.

In 2008, IBC's CEE Decommissioning & Waste Cooperation will focus and bring together multinational experience for an exchange of current knowledge and the sharing of future plans to enable new and continued multilateral cooperation and opportunity. This will come at a time when the global nuclear community is faced with great challenge and opportunity through increased activity worldwide.

Day One has been designed to allow full discussion of strategies and issues by representatives from across the CEE region, European Commission and EBRD. An Experience session on Day Two will allow experts to discuss and share knowledge in the latest developments and experiences. Lessons learned and techniques will be contrasted with one another and solutions shared in topics to include: planning, risk, protection, plant transition, decontamination, disposal routes, storage and training...

POST CONFERENCE TECHNICAL TOUR

GREIFSWALD NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
20th JUNE 2008

The Greifswald Nuclear Power Plant decommissioning project is one of the largest in the world and one of the first NPP sites in Germany to go through the process. The site contained 8 units of the WWER 440 Russian-designed reactor and several facilities to handle and store fuel and radioactive waste. In 1989, operating units 1-5 were switched off and construction on units 6-8 halted. The subsequent decision to decommission all the units has involved large reductions in personnel, a wide range of technical decommissioning activities and the onsite construction of the Interim Storage North (ISN) facility, which serves as an independent and integrated treatment and storage centre for radioactive waste and dismantled material, as well as storage for spent fuel.
